Fortum starts the design of a small-scale hydrogen pilot plant in Loviisa, Finland. In the project, hydrogen production is piloted for the use of industrial customers. According to the preliminary plans, the 1-2 megawatt electrolyzer plant would be placed in containers on a Fortum-owned area near the company’s Loviisa nuclear power plant. Fortum will make a possible investment decision on the pilot plant at a later stage.
Hydrogen produced by carbon dioxide-free nuclear, wind and solar power can be used to produce carbon-neutral fuels for use in transport and industry. Hydrogen is also particularly suitable for reducing industrial emissions, such as the large-scale production of fossil-free steel, which is difficult to electrify.
"The design of the pilot plant supports the development of our hydrogen business. We have a lot of clean electricity production and we want to help industry to decarbonise and thereby meet the demand for clean products. Clean hydrogen is one of the key factors here," says Mikko Muoniovaara, responsible for Fortum's hydrogen projects in Finland.
A filling station is planned to be built in connection with the hydrogen pilot plant, where the hydrogen would be stored and from where it would be delivered to customers. Part of the hydrogen could be used in the production process of the Loviisa nuclear power plant.
"We have excellent know-how in the design of hydrogen technology. Testing hydrogen production in the megawatt scale would provide concrete experience and best lessons for future projects. The location of the pilot plant near the Loviisa nuclear power plant is an example of a development towards a future energy system combining different energy sectors and production forms. ," concludes Muoniovaara.
