The municipality of Sipoo and Fortum are planning to start land-use planning for a data centre project in the Stormosskärret area of Sipoo. The site, which covers about 88 hectares along Öljytie road, is being planned as a workplace area. The agreement to begin the land-use planning will be discussed by the municipality’s land-use committee in June.
The agreement to begin land-use planning would allow a new workplace area to be built on municipality-owned land in the Savijärvi area. Based on the agreement, the municipality of Sipoo would start working on a town plan for the area.
Once the town plan has been completed, the municipality and Fortum will agree on the ownership of the site. The actual investments in the areas would be made by the data centre developer. Fortum has previously developed similar areas in Espoo and Kirkkonummi as part of the Espoo Clean Heat project in cooperation with Microsoft.
Sipoo’s Executive Director for Urban Development, Albert Andersson, describes the project as a way of creating new jobs in Sipoo. “We are delighted with the development of this new workplace area and the interest that Fortum is showing in Sipoo as an investment location. The open and good negotiating atmosphere with Fortum has enabled us to move ahead swiftly with this important project,” comments Andersson.
”Fortum’s aim is to develop and market the area to potential investors and to enable the actors to carry out the project smoothly. Stormosskärret is located close to Fingrid’s substation, which together with good transport connections, location and workforce availability, makes it an excellent location. In line with its strategy, Fortum is driving the clean energy transition,” notes Vesa Maso from Fortum’s Industrial Customer Electrification unit.
