Biodiversity should be a top priority for all businesses

Biowizard is a new venture initiated at Fortum. The idea of biowizard was born wanting to address the biodiversity challenge, and customers’ needs for mitigating biodiversity loss in their operations. Biodiversity loss is an ever more important topic that companies need to assess and take measures on, so understanding what types of challenges businesses are grappling with around the topic is key. After conducting interviews with sustainability experts from various industries, it became clear that companies are looking for guidance on how to structure and begin their biodiversity work. This is how biowizard was born, co-founded by Tii Suokivi and Linnea Anttila.

Biodiversity is a top priority, but it’s hard to grasp. Companies are lacking biodiversity strategies and the overall readiness to tackle this important topic is low. Many perceive biodiversity issues as being disconnected from business, and difficult to structure and measure. At the same time there is growing pressure from regulation to report on sustainability and biodiversity topics.

Biodiversity’s impact on business is a two-way street: biodiversity is affected by business – and at the same time biodiversity loss affects business. Businesses and their operations are largely dependent on biodiversity. The different ecosystem services nature provides benefit businesses, for example in the form of raw materials. On the flip side of the coin, businesses can harm biodiversity, which leads to diminishing the value biodiversity can offer companies – if biodiversity loss isn’t halted.

Helping understand biodiversity impacts

Biowizard is the answer to companies that are looking to tackle biodiversity loss and want guidance on their business’ connection to biodiversity, how to plan their biodiversity program, understand their impacts and dependencies on nature, structure their goal setting and actions and provide tools for reporting.

Businesses need a biodiversity strategy with clear, actionable, and science-based targets. In a world where consumers, laws, and regulations increasingly put pressure on businesses to act responsibly with biodiversity issues, a biodiversity strategy is essential. As a one-stop-shop, biowizard offers the needed solutions and tools to companies, regardless of industry or size.

Customer needs are at the centre of biowizard. The service biowizard offers to businesses is built with customer challenges in mind, always solving their challenges and needs. Currently, biowizard is piloted with chosen companies while the product is finalized. In the future, biowizard will be able to service all types of companies. biowizard is a Valkea portfolio startup and operates from Maria 01,

the Nordics’ leading startup campus, and is a part of the entrepreneurial community on site. Biowizard will launch commercially in 2024.
