How do I change electricity company to Fortum?

As a new customer, you do not need to contact your previous electricity supplier to terminate your contract with them. We will take care of this for you as part of your customer relationship with Fortum. When you switch electricity providers, your new contract will take effect no sooner than 16 days after signing.

We will also notify your local electricity distribution company that a Fortum electricity contract is starting in your name. If you do not yet have a distribution contract, it will be transferred to you at the same time.

Note! If you have signed an electricity contract with another provider due to a move but then choose Fortum instead, you must cancel the previously made contract with the other company yourself.

What electricity contracts are there?

You can choose whether you want a variable price, a fixed price, or a fixed price with a consumption effect. Fortum’s selection includes:

  • Fortum Tarkka – Market-priced electricity contract

  • Fortum Duo – Fixed price with a consumption effect

  • Fortum Kesto – Fixed price valid until further notice

How do I cancel my contract?

You can contact our customer service at 0200 19000.

Why do I get two bills?

You will receive two separate invoices: one for electricity sales and another for electricity transmission. Fortum invoices you for electricity sales, while your local grid company charges you for electricity transmission. If your local grid company is Caruna, you will receive a combined invoice for both electricity sales and transmission.

E-invoicing is a simple and convenient way to receive and pay your bills through your online bank.

On what date does electricity supply start in my new home?

The electricity supply starts on the same day your Fortum electricity contract begins. Your local electricity distribution company will deliver the electricity you purchase from us to your new home.

Start date on order and contract confirmation
You should find both the order confirmation and contract confirmation in your email. The order confirmation shows your requested start date, while the contract confirmation indicates the date that the delivery has been confirmed with the grid company. In most cases, the requested date can be accommodated.

Missing confirmation?
If you don't see the confirmations in your email, check your spam folder. It's also possible that you selected to receive the confirmation by mail instead. Could the confirmations have been sent to your previous address? (Remember to update your address with the postal service!)

How to check your contract start date in Fortum’s online service
In Fortum’s online service, you can find the details of your new home’s contract under "Contracts". For an open ended contract, the contract start date, which is also the electricity supply start date, is displayed. For a fixed-term contract, the contract period shows the start date. You can also easily find the contract start date in the Fortum mobile app. If the start date is not visible, check the contract page link for more details.

Has my old contract ended?

If your previous home’s contract was also with Fortum, you can easily check its status in Fortum’s online service or mobile app.

Old home’s contract in the app or online service

In Fortum’s online service, your previous home’s contract will be visible until the termination has been ordered. If you have reported the contract termination, you will see a note stating "contract ending." Once the contract has ended, it will no longer appear on your contracts page. However, you can still find archived electricity bills from your previous home in Fortum’s online service.

In the Fortum mobile app, your old home’s contract details remain visible for three months after the contract has ended before they are removed from the service.

Final invoice

Billing is contract-specific. When your old home’s contract ends, you will receive a final invoice. The new home’s electricity bill will be separate from the old home’s bill. If you are entitled to a refund instead of a charge, please provide us with your bank account details for the refund transfer. Always ensure that you are using an official Fortum service and not a fraudulent website.

Termination of the electricity distribution contract

When your electricity contract with Fortum is marked for termination due to a move, this information is automatically forwarded to your local distribution network operator (electricity transmission company). Therefore, you do not need to separately terminate your electricity distribution contract if you were a Fortum electricity customer at both your previous and new addresses.

My old contract ended even though I didn’t report it—how is that possible?

Two electricity contracts cannot exist at the same time for the same address. If a new resident has moved into your old home and signed an electricity contract for that address, your electricity and distribution contracts will be automatically terminated.

How is the electricity price set?

The price of electricity is determined through trading based on supply and demand. The hourly wholesale price for the following day, known as the spot price, is set in the Nordic electricity exchange. The prices of long-term contracts are influenced by long-term forecasts and the price hedging mechanisms used in trading.

Several factors affect the formation of the wholesale price, including the type of production, the global market price of fuels used for electricity generation, the cost of emission allowances, and in the Nordic region, particularly the availability of hydropower reserves in Norway.

How the wholesale price affects customer contract prices

  • If a customer has a fixed-term fixed-price contract, the energy price remains unchanged throughout the contract period, unless they have the Fortum Vaihtotakuu (Switch Guarantee) service, which allows switching to a more affordable contract after the first year.

  • The Fortum Tarkka (Spot price contract) includes its own price management tools.

  • With a Fortum Tarkka contract, customers can prepare for rising prices with Price Guarantee, which allows them to lock in a fixed price for specific periods, such as the winter months, to protect against potential price spikes.

Can the price be changed if I have a fixed electricity price?

If you have a fixed-price electricity contract, we will not change the electricity price during the contract period. This means you know exactly how much you pay per kilowatt-hour, and your bill amount will only vary based on your consumption – that is, how many kilowatt-hours you use.

If you are unsure how long your fixed price is valid, you can check it on your bill or by logging into the online service.

What is the electricity price today?

You can check the current electricity market price on the Nord Pool website. You can also view prices on our website.

How do I choose between fixed and spot price?

Fixed or spot-priced electricity – which suits you best?

Both types of contracts have their advantages and disadvantages, and the most important thing is to make an informed decision based on what best fits your financial situation and lifestyle.

Living situation

Your type of housing influences whether a fixed price or spot-priced electricity is the better option.

  • In detached houses, electricity consumption is usually higher than in apartments, meaning potential price increases in the spot market could significantly impact your finances. On the other hand, you won’t benefit from low electricity prices if they occur.

  • Larger homes generally consume more electricity, while cottages and holiday homes may only use electricity part of the time.

  • Consider your living situation and estimate how high your electricity consumption is or will be.

Personal finances

If you have a tight monthly budget, a fixed electricity price might be a good choice. You will know exactly how much you pay per kilowatt-hour, and your price won’t change during the contract period. This ensures stable bills and predictability in your finances.

Interest in monitoring electricity prices

If you enjoy following electricity market trends, spot-priced electricity might be the best choice.

  • Over time, spot electricity is often cheaper, even though prices fluctuate from hour to hour.

  • With the Fortum app, you can track electricity prices in real-time and monitor monthly variations, giving you

full transparency over your electricity costs.

Certainty vs. Flexibility

  • A fixed electricity contract provides certainty, as you always pay the same price per kilowatt-hour. However, you won’t benefit from price drops if market prices decrease.

  • The choice depends on you: Do you prefer full control over your electricity costs, or are you willing to accept price fluctuations? Can you handle occasional price spikes if it means paying less at other times?

Ultimately, the right choice depends on your individual needs and lifestyle.

What are negative electricity prices?

Spot-priced electricity is electricity where the price is determined in the international Nord Pool electricity exchange based on supply and demand. Unlike a fixed-price electricity contract, the price of spot electricity fluctuates hourly, depending on market conditions.

One advantage of spot electricity is that it reflects the real market prices, which can result in savings when electricity demand is low, and supply is high. And yes – sometimes the spot price of electricity can even be negative.

However, it’s important to remember that the total electricity price for consumers typically never becomes negative, as electricity transmission costs and taxes remain unchanged. This means that receiving a "refund" for consumed electricity during negative price hours is unlikely. Still, using electricity during low-price or negative-price hours is certainly beneficial.

What is changing with how to measure electricity usage?

A change is coming to the daily lives of electricity customers summer 2025 – quarter-hour electricity pricing. In the future, electricity spot prices will fluctuate every 15 minutes instead of the current system, where prices are determined for each hour of the day. This means that with spot electricity, there can be up to 96 different prices per day.

Quarter-hour pricing is set to take effect in Finland on June 12, 2025. The goal of this change is to create a more stable and efficient electricity market that better reflects the real variations in electricity demand and production. However, the basic logic of spot electricity will remain the same for customers, but price fluctuations will occur more frequently throughout the day.
