The 100% solar energy additional service applies to renewable energy, the production of which does not generate carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
The origin of solar electricity sold by Fortum to residential customers is verified in accordance with the European Guarantee of Origin system.
All electricity sold by Fortum to consumer customers is produced either with nuclear power or renewable energy sources, which is verified by guarantees of origin.

Fortum supports the John Nurminen Foundation's work to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage with an annual €5/100% solar energy additional service agreement.

The John Nurminen Foundation implements effective Baltic Sea protection measures and ensures that the stories of the sea are passed on to future generations. The foundation's projects improve the state of the Baltic Sea through concrete measures that reduce the load on the sea and environmental risks.

Work guided by measurable results and impact

The John Nurminen Foundation has been working to protect the Baltic Sea for over 15 years, and has launched dozens of Clean Baltic Sea projects during this time. The ongoing Clean Baltic Sea projects reduce eutrophication emissions to the Baltic Sea by cutting point loads from municipal wastewater treatment plants and industry, and by reducing diffuse loads from agriculture using various water protection methods. In addition, the foundation’s projects remove loads that have already entered the sea and internal loads, for example through managed fishing, and investigate new ways to control internal loads. The foundation also actively monitors already completed treatment plant projects in Russia, Belarus and Poland, where it has been involved as a financier or implementer.

The John Nurminen Foundation is also an award-winning information broker and producer of maritime cultural content. The foundation has published over 40 books telling stories about the sea, and has organized numerous exhibitions and events on the Baltic Sea. Making the story of the sea and its history known is important, because at the same time we learn to understand why our unique Baltic Sea must also be protected.

Prices for guarantees of origin are determined by supply and demand. For example, the amount of rainfall affects the production and thus the availability of hydropower, and the demand for hydropower determines the price of a hydropower guarantee of origin.
