Reliable electricity company

Fortum is a well-known and trustworthy Finnish electricity company and market leader in Finland.

How does Fortum Duo work?

Fortum Duo is a stable electricity contract that protects you from major fluctuations in electricity market prices. You get a fixed base price level for two years and the opportunity to influence your electricity price through consumption impact.

The majority of the price in the Duo contract is fixed. However, the price you pay is slightly affected by the consumption impact, which can increase or decrease your electricity price. So far, 90% of Duo customers have had an average annual consumption impact between -1 c/kWh and +1 c/kWh.

The consumption impact is determined by when during the day and on which days you use the majority of your electricity. Generally, if you use most electricity at the same time as others, when electricity market prices are high (often during weekday evenings), the consumption impact will increase your price. Conversely, if you use most electricity during cheaper times (e.g., nights and weekends), your price will decrease.

The consumption impact is added to or deducted from the c/kWh price you pay for electricity. For example, if you sign a Duo contract at a price of 8.19 c/kWh and your consumption impact is -0.5 c/kWh, you will pay 8.19 - 0.5 = 7.69 c/kWh for your electricity that month. If your consumption impact is +1 c/kWh, you will pay 8.19 + 1 = 9.19 c/kWh for that month.

The Duo contract is suitable for customers:

  • who want protection from price fluctuations

  • who value peace of mind and a stable base price for two years

  • who want to predict their future electricity bills

How is the consumption impact determined?

The consumption impact is calculated retroactively at the end of each month based on your hourly electricity consumption and the hourly prices from the electricity market.

In practice, your hourly electricity consumption (kWh) is multiplied by the hourly prices from the electricity market (c/kWh). This calculation shows what your price would have been if you had a spot price electricity contract. The total amount is then divided by your total electricity consumption for the month (kWh), giving you the average price you would have paid with a spot price electricity contract (c/kWh). From this amount, the average market price (c/kWh) for the month is subtracted, resulting in your consumption impact (c/kWh).

Your consumption impact is positive, meaning it increases the price, if the average hourly price for your electricity consumption, calculated using the market’s hourly prices, is higher than the market’s average price for the month. Conversely, your consumption impact is negative, meaning it lowers the price, if the average hourly price for your consumption is lower than the market’s average price for the month.

The consumption impact is determined at the end of each month, retroactively, based on your hourly electricity usage and the hourly market prices.

In practice, your hourly electricity usage (kWh) is multiplied by the hourly market prices (c/kWh). This shows what your price would have been if you had a spot price electricity contract. This amount is then divided by your total electricity usage for the month (kWh), giving the average price you would have paid with a spot price electricity contract (c/kWh). From this figure, the average market price (c/kWh) for the month is subtracted, resulting in your consumption impact (c/kWh).

Your consumption impact is positive, meaning it increases the price, if the average hourly price for your electricity usage, calculated using market prices, is higher than the average market price for the month. Conversely, your consumption impact is negative, meaning it decreases the price, if the average hourly price for your electricity usage is lower than the average market price for the month.

The majority of the price in the Duo contract is fixed. However, your price is slightly affected by the consumption impact, which can either increase or decrease your electricity price. So far, 90% of Duo customers have had an average annual consumption impact ranging between -1 c/kWh and +1 c/kWh.

The consumption impact is determined based on when during the day and which days you use most of your electricity. Generally, if you use most electricity at the same time as other Finns, when spot electricity prices are high (typically on weekday evenings), the consumption impact will increase your price. Conversely, if you use most electricity during cheaper times (e.g., nights and weekends), your price will decrease.

The consumption impact is added to or subtracted from the electricity price you pay per kWh. For example, if you sign a Duo contract at a price of 8.19 c/kWh and your consumption impact is -0.5 c/kWh, you will pay 8.19 - 0.5 = 7.69 c/kWh for that month. If your consumption impact is +1 c/kWh, you will pay 8.19 + 1 = 9.19 c/kWh for that month.

Fortum Duo includes a fixed part that provides stability and predictability. In the Fortum Duo contract, the fixed part ensures that the price per kilowatt-hour remains unchanged throughout the entire contract period. Additionally, the contract has a variable part, which is based on the consumption impact and determined by your electricity consumption habits. The consumption impact is calculated retroactively at the end of each month based on your hourly electricity consumption and the hourly prices on the electricity market.

Fortum Duo is suitable for you if you want to partially plan your costs in advance but also have the opportunity to influence the electricity price. The majority of the price in the Duo contract is fixed, but it is slightly affected by the consumption impact, which can either increase or decrease your electricity price.

Fortum Duo, as the name suggests, is a combination of variable and fixed electricity pricing. With this contract, you get both a fixed and a variable component. If you want both stability and predictability but also the ability to influence your costs, Fortum Duo is the right choice for you.

Fortum Kesto's price follows the fluctuations of the electricity market, meaning the price you pay may vary slightly from month to month. However, you always know your electricity price on a monthly basis.
